The National Level Workshop on Research Methodology, titled "WORM 2023 – Germinate Your Idea.” was held from May 8th to May 10th, 2023, at the New Academic Block of Vinayaka Mission's Medical College and Hospital in Karaikal, Pondicherry (U.T). The workshop aimed to enhance participants’ knowledge and skills in research methodology and promote research culture among faculty & postgraduate medical students. The workshop was organized by the IQAC, Department of Community Medicine & Central Research Lab at VMMC. Under the patronage of Honble Dr. A. Shanmugasundaram, Founder Chancellor , VMRF DU and Hon’ ble Mrs. Annapoorani Shanmugasundaram, Madam Trustee, VMRFDU and under the able guidance and support of Hon’ble Mr.N.V.Chandrasekar, Vice President, VMRF DU and Hon’ble Mrs.Arunadevi Chandrasekar, Madam Trustee, VMRF DU the event brought together distinguished speakers and experts in the field of medical research. The event was inaugurated by our Respected Dean Dr. C. Gunasekaran. Our Medical Superintendent Dr..K.Cheran, Vice Principal Dr. G.Vijaya Kumar Nair, Research Director (Medicine) Dr. G.Ambujam facilitated the event. All the heads of department and faculty members attended and graced the occasion. A total of more than 50 participants registered and attended the workshop. The workshop began with an introduction emphasizing the crucial role of research in the medical field, highlighting its contribution to the development of new treatments and the improvement of existing practices. The speakers stressed about the importance of research methodology training for postgraduate students to encourage their active participation in research. The sessions provided valuable insights into various aspects of research methodology, equipping the participants with the necessary knowledge and skills to conduct quality research. The workshop concluded with a valedictory function, during which our Respected Dean Dr.C.Gunasekaran delivered the presidential address. Key Note Address about the Workshop was delivered by Dr.P.Gnanasckar, Director IQAC, VMRF DU & Dr.S.A.V Satya Murty Director Research, VMRF DU. Dr.S.Suriyanarayanan, Deputy Director Research, VMRF DU, Dr.R.Jaichandiran, Deputy Director Research, VMRF DU facilitated the event. Our Medical Superintendent Dr..K.Cheran, Vice Principal Dr. G.Vijaya Kumar Nair, Research Director (Medicine) Dr. G.Ambujam also facilitated the event. Participation Certificate were issued to all the participants. The workshop concluded with a session where the participants had the opportunity to summarize their learnings from the workshop. The valedictory function included closing remarks, expressions of gratitude, an acknowledgments to all the speakers, organizers, and participants for their valuable contributions to the workshop. Overall, the National Level Workshop on Research Methodology - 2023 was a successful event that provided a platform for learning, collaboration, and the exchange of ideas in the field of medical research. The workshop's comprehensive agenda and distinguished speakers ensured that the participants gained valuable insights and enhanced their research skills, contributing to the advancement of medical knowledge and practice. Day 1 - May 8, 2023: Session 1: Dr. Deepti Shashtri, Deputy Dean at VMKVMC, Salem, delivered an introductory session titled "Introduction to Research." The session provided an overview of the research process and its significance in the medical field. Dr. Shasthri also discussed the importance of bridging the gap between laboratory research and clinical applications. Session 2: Dr. Velmurugan, Research Scientist at KMCH, Coimbatore, conducted a session on "From lab bench to bedside: Bridging the gap." The participants learned about the translation of research findings from the laboratory to practical healthcare applications. Session 3: Dr. G. Kalaiselvan, Dean (Research) and Professor & HOD at the Department of Community Medicine SMVYMC, Pondy, delivered a session on "How to Frame the title,research question, and objective." The participants gained insights into formulating clear and focused rescarch objectives and developing appropriate research questions. Session 4: Dr. R. Niranjjan, Associate Professor in the Department of Community Medicine at VMMC, Karaikal, conducted a session on "Study Design - Cross-Sectional.” The participants learned about the cross-sectional study design, its advantages, and its applications in medical research. Session 5: Dr. Kirubakaran, Senior Assistant Professor in the Department of Community Medicine at Omandurar Government Medical College, Chennai, delivered a session on "Study Design - Case Control." The participants gained knowledge about case-control study design, its strengths, and its limitations. Session 6: Dr. Sangeetha, Professor and Head of the Department of Community Medicine at VMRUMC, Salem, conducted a session on "Study Design - Cohort.” The participants learnedabout cohort study design, its various types, and its importance in longitudinal research. Session 7: Dr. Kannan, Professor department of Community Medicine at SLIMS, Pondicherry, delivered a session on. “Choosing the right study design. “The participants gained knowledge about right study design. Session 8: Dr. Sudharshini, Associate Professor Department of Community Medicine at Madras Medical College, Chennai, conducted session on. ."Domains to search for articles & writings an effective review of literature. "The participants learned about which are all the correct domains to search for articles and how to write an effective literature review.The day concluded with a tea break, providing participants an opportunity to network and refresh themselves. Day 2 - May 9, 2023: Session 1: Dr. Ganesh Bala, Professor in the Department of ENT and IQAC Co-ordinator at VMMC, Karaikal, conducted a session on "Ethics in biomedical research.” ." The participants learned about the ethical considerations and guidelines to be followed in conducting biomedicalresearch. Session 2: Dr, Prasad, Professor in the Department of Community Medicine at AVMC, Pondicherry, delivered a session on"Sampling methods and techniques.” The participants gained an understanding of different sampling methods used in research and their appropriate applications. Session 3: Dr. Arun, Assistant Professor in the Department of Community Medicine at MGMCRI, Pondicherry, conducted a session on "Sample size calculation.” The participants learned how to determine the required sample size for their research studies. Session 4: Dr. Gayathri, Assistant Professor in the Department of Community Medicine at VMMC, Karaikal, delivered a session on "Designing questionnaires and tools of measurement.” The participants learned about the principles and techniques of designing effective research questionnaires and measurement tools. Session 5: Dr. Nancy Sebastian, Assistant Professor in the Department of Community Medicine at VMMC, Karaikal, conducted a session on "Data collection, Data Entry, and Analysis." The participants gained insights into the process of collecting research data, entering it into databases, and analyzing it using appropriate statistical methods. The day included a tea break, providing participants with a short break for refreshments. Session 6: Dr. SathishKumar, Assistant Professor in the Department of Community Medicine at VMMC, Karaikal, delivered a session on "Descriptive Statistics." The participants learned about different descriptive statistical measures used to summarize and present data. Session 7: Dr. Lokesh maran, Associate Professor in the Department of Community Medicine at MGMCRI, Pondicherry, conducted a session on "Inferential Statistics.” The participants gained an understanding of inferential statistical techniques used to draw conclusions and make inferences from research data. Sessions 6 and 7, delivered by Dr. SathishKumar and Dr. Lokesh maran, included hands-onpractice with statistical software. Day 3 - May 10, 2023: Session 1: Dr. Sindhuri, Assistant Professor in the Department of Community Medicine at Shri Sathya Sai Medical College and Research Institute, Chennai, conducted a session on "How to write results and discussions & conclusion." The participants lcarncd about effective strategics for presenting research results and discussing their implications. They also gained insights into writing conclusive statements that align with the study findings. Session 2: Dr. Jayachandran, Deputy Director of Research at VMRF-DU, Salem, delivered a session on "Thesis Proposal & Thesis Writing." The participants received guidance on developing a comprehensive thesis proposal and learned about the essential components and structure of a thesis. Session 3: Dr. Suryanarayanan, Deputy Director of Research at VMRF-DU, Salem, focused on "Misconduct in Research - Plagiarism." The participants learned about the ethical implications of plagiarism in research and the importance of maintaining integrity and originality in scientific work. Session 4: Dr. Suganya, Assistant Professor of Research at VMMC, Karaikal, conducted a session on "How to write an effective research article & How to Sell it?" The participants gained insights into the key elements of a research article and learned effective strategies for writing and presenting their research find ings to a wider audience Session 5: Dr. Prcetham Mahajan, Professor & HOD of the Department of Community Medicine at JIPMER, Karaikal, delivered a session on "Research paradigm and complexity in health research.” The participants explored different research paradigms and the challenges and complexities associated with conducting research in the healthcare field. Session : 6: Dr. Satya Murty, Director of Rescarch at VMRF-DU, Salem, provided an overview of "Overview of funding agencies and extramural funding.” The participants learned about different funding agencies and opportunities available for researchers to secure extramural funding for their research projects. Session 7: Dr. Kavitha, Professor & HOD of the Department of Community Medicine at IGMC, Pondicherry, conducted a session on "Critical appraisal of research article.” The participants learned how to critically evaluate research articles, assess the quality of evidence presented, and make informed decisions based on the findings. Session 8: Dr. Kalyani, Professor & HOD of the Department of Community Medicine at RMMC, Chithambaram, delivered a session on "Effective Journal Club Presentation.” The participants learned effective techniques for presenting and discussing research articles in a journal club setting. Session 9: Dr. Avinash Kumar, Assistant Professor in the Department of Community Medicine at JIPMER, Karaikal, conducted a session on "Bias and ways to minimize them." The participants learned about different types of biases that can affect research outcomes and explored methods to minimize bias and enhance the validity and reliability of research findings.
